With drum fill *5, we place the snare then alternate with tom 1.  It is a useful fill; short but dynamic.  The video features one of my students.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rL81Jf6tVg

Drum lessons have been a part of my life since 1997.  Since that time I have learnt much through witnessing the progression of my students.  Reminds me of something I read, 'if you want to learn something, teach it'.  Teaching drums has made me a much better drummer.  Here is the weekend and I am still taking students in Harrow, UK. www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

The power of gravity and rebounding nature of the stick when struck over the drum is what I teach my students.  When a drummer uses excessive force to move the stick, this produces unnecessary strain and stress on the body, sticks and drums.  Drumming for me concerns directing the sticks with as little force as possible.  These are some drum lesson videos.  http://westlondon-drumtutor.com/?page_id=523

The ride cymbal has a wide range of expression.  These are the different sounds a drummer can make; struck on the tip of stick on the outer cymbal, tip of stick on middle, tip of stick on the bell, edge of stick on outer cymbal, on middle, and on bell.  On top of this there are different angles and trajectories that alter the sound.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

The way to bring about an excellent result regarding timing is to hang behind the beat.  First you need to feel the pulse, then think of the pulse as being just in front.  Then you need to listen without stopping.  Listening and being musically conscious is also key to playing drums with dynamism, musicality and panache. visit www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Buzz or multiple bounce roll is a true measure of the exact and most proficient way to hold a drum stick.  For the stick to move rapidly, unimpeded, the drummer must not strangle the stick.  Check out www.westlondon-drumtutor.com for more articles and drum lessons.

In the coming weeks I will be making some videos on my iPhone for my students.  It has been a 4 year plus ongoing promise to myself to expand my website in this way and now, I will actually do it.  So, the next series of videos will focus on stick holding technique, rudiments and basic fills.  Thanks for reading my blogs this week.

Bass drum technique along with stick holding technique are the first and vital aspects of drumming and making real and excellent drum sounds.  I teach that having the toe on the bass pedal and not 'stomping' on the pedal is what one must do.  So controlling the bass drum is like standing on your toes and moving the pedal without loosing contact; much like the way a boxer moves, or a tennis player - light on the feet.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

As a drum teacher I feel that the four core rudiments are single stroke, double stroke, paradiddle, and buzz role.  I teach how to hold the sticks then apply the rudiments; but it is buzz role that consolidates the actual correct stick holding technique.  This is because it is impossible to do a buzz role until one holds the sticks correct.

Moeller Technique allows a drummer to use the drum stick with finesse, dynamics, subtlety, and all in all makes the sound ones makes 'better'.  Stick holding technique in general is vital and key to how a drummer makes great sounds without stressing the muscles or tendons.  Drumming must be as effortless as a bird flying.  www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

The technical exercises in Trinity Rockschool syllabus are really helpful, but I particularly like the rudiment studies on each grade.  There is much to be gained from a fluid application of the snare drum rudiments in a musical way.  Visit www.westlondon-drumtutor.com

Moving through the Trinity Rockschool grades with one of my students has been a special experience owing to the genuine enthusiasm she has for learning the drums based on a high work ethic and integrity of purpose.  She practiced 4 hours on Tuesday!  Check www.westlondon-drumtutor.com for news and drum lesson news in Harrow.

Hers is a basic drum fill using a 'spacious' five stroke approach, where the first beat is a flam and the rest are played R, L, RL.  This can then be used on the toms for variety and dynamics.  Visit http://youtu.be/uyIus5y4few

Last night I taught half of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit to my student in Harrow on the Hill.  He actually got the syncopated raw punk funk groove with results I was pleased with.  The other songs on Nirvana's Nevermind are also great examples of drumming in a high octane funk punk way.  Visit http://westlondon-drumtutor.com/ for drum lessons on Skype or in Harrow.
